Let Us Have Peace
Vol. XX, Issue: 01

Dear Friends,

Dear Friends,

We celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a Pieces for Peace workshop at the General Grant National Memorial. We feel that this was especially appropriate for two reasons:

1. Our 400-foot "Rolling Bench" mosaic benches surround the tomb.

2. President Grant was very concerned with peace. In particular, he was concerned with the plight of African Americans and native Indian tribes, in addition to civil rights for all Americans. Grant's 1868 campaign slogan, "Let us have peace," defined his motivation and assured his success. As president for two terms, Grant made many advances in both civil and human rights. In 1869 and 1871, Grant signed bills promoting voting rights and prosecuting Ku Klux Klan leaders.

The Pieces for Peace created on January 18 continued to "punch holes in the darkness" and we tried to bring some more light in, as Martin Luther King, Jr. used to say. We thank our partners at the National Parks Service for making this all possible.

With best wishes,

Thinking globally and acting locally, CITYarts' projects build bridges of cultural understanding and give youth the opportunity to take an active role in shaping their future.

The Young Minds Build Bridges program connects our youth in New York to the international community, spreading their voices in a quest for peace and raising awareness of global warming.

Our projects give youth a stage to ask, "What can I do to reduce the speed of global warming?" Our teens are taking the future into their own hands, getting actively involved in their communities, and assuming responsibility through the creation of murals and mosaics with CITYarts.

Since 1968, CITYarts has created 279 projects that have transformed communities and impacted over 100,000 kids, collaborated with more than 500 artists, and partnered with over 300,000 volunteers in the process.

Thank you in advance for your generous support and for joining CITYarts in celebrating 40 years of "Making a Difference Through the Arts."
