Dear friends,
As we were standing ready to hear the welcoming remarks of Mr. Ahmad Fawzi, Director of the News & Media Division of the UN Department of Public Information, Amir Dossal, Executive Director of the UN Office for Partnerships whispered in my ear, "You are making history."
I looked around me at the two women standing side by side - one from Israel, one from Dubai. What a peaceful, hopeful sight! Israel's UN Ambassador standing by the representative for Her Highness Sheikha Manal of Dubai, who stood next to the UN Ambassador of Malta. I realized that these people represented about 20 UN Ambassadors that already support us. For me personally - born in Russia, raised in Israel, and an American citizen - I truly savored this moment at the UN.
Today, youth from over 40 countries are already involved in the CITYarts Pieces for Peace project, and we hope that with the exhibition displayed at the UN through February 2010, we will recruit most of the countries represented by the UN...we have only 150 to go! Visitors from around the world can visit daily for free, and more kids have a chance to create a "piece for peace." We believe that once the UN Ambassadors send a message of support to the youth of their country, they will join us and the Youth Movement for Peace will become a reality. In Malta, the Board of Education already wants all students within the school system to create a "piece for peace," and they have plans to create a national postage stamp with a Pieces for Peace design! The United Arab Emirates hosted a competition for their students to create "pieces for peace", some of which are on display now at the UN.
I'm so grateful to Mr. Dossal, whose generosity and vision pushed this exhibition to become a reality, with the supportive energy of Lucie Hrbkova; our supporter, UN Ambassador of Malta Mr. Saviour Borg, who announced the Pieces for Peace activities that will take place in his country next year; the UN Department of Public Information, especially Liza Wichmann and Jan Arnesen; Nazneen R. Shafi and Muna Bin Kalli of the Dubai Women Establishment, who helped bring this dream down to earth; and of course the commitment of Her Highness Sheika Manal to foster creativity and peace in the minds of UAE youth, and under whose royal patronage this groundbreaking exhibition at the UN was made possible.
As we celebrate the holidays and prepare for the New Year, I ask you to keep one thought in mind: When kids create they do not destroy! Help us to help them engage their minds and lives in positive activities.
My best wishes for a happy and healthy 2010,
Tsipi Ben-Haim Executive & Artistic Director CITYarts, Inc.

Thinking globally and acting locally,
CITYarts' projects build bridges of cultural understanding and give
youth the opportunity to take an active role in shaping their future. The Young Minds Build Bridges program connects our youth in New York to the international
community, spreading their voices in a quest for peace and raising awareness of global warming.
Our projects give youth a stage to ask, "What
can I do to reduce the speed of global warming?" Our teens are taking
the future into their own hands, getting actively involved in their
communities, and assuming responsibility through the creation of murals
and mosaics with CITYarts.
Since 1968, CITYarts has created 279 projects that have
transformed communities and impacted over 100,000 kids, collaborated
with more than 500 artists, and partnered with over 300,000 volunteers
in the process. Thank you in advance for your generous support and for
joining CITYarts in celebrating 40 years of "Making a Difference
Through the Arts." |
