Dear friends,
Exhibiting Pieces for Peace at the European Parliament
was a true milestone for CITYarts, and the Pieces for Peace project in
particular. We celebrated peace with leaders of Parliament like Jo Leinen
and Martin Schulz, who endorsed us and stand behind our initiative to connect
youth around the world in their quest for peace. All this happened at the
Parliament, where achieving peace is one of the major goals. It's truly
commendable to have people of their stature take time from their very busy
political schedules to stand behind children and art, empowering our children and youth just like CITYarts' mission aims to do.
It only proves once again that the voices of our children
and youth may be heard and will be listened to if we continue to strive and
create opportunities for them to be engaged on a daily basis in making a
difference in their community. When they are given the opportunities, they rise
to the occasion and the powerful leaders of today will open for them the gates
to become the leaders of tomorrow. Jo Leinen and his dedicated assistant Sandra
Parthie are now spear-heading the effort to get the 16 (out of 27) remaining countries in
the European Union involved in Pieces for
Peace.
October 6 also marked two years since I met Dr. Viviane
Reding, Member of the European Commission, at the wedding of my friends Udo and
Kirsten Van Kampen, where I started exploring with her the possibilities of
bringing the exhibition to the European Parliament. Good things usually take
time and a lot of effort, but with the right people involved, and when they
feel that it is important instead of just thinking that it is, the sky is the
limit.
Of course, transporting the exhibition overseas and everything else involved in realizing this project cannot be
done without financial support. We are so very grateful that Allianz SE, through
the request of Steven Althaus, awarded us the funding that allowed this
exhibition to take place and guaranteed us to take it to two additional
locations. As we prepared for the installation in the Parliament, we had
Allianz's office in Brussels, headed by Dr. Herbert Woopen, handle the sponsorship
beyond our expectations, and the collaboration continues.
We were also very lucky to discover that the first
ambassador to endorse Pieces for Peace five years ago when he was the German
Ambassador to the United States, Wolfgang Ischinger, is now the Global Head of
Government Relations & Public Policy at Allianz. It was perfect to have him
represent Allianz as the sponsor and supporter of the project.
During the opening, I enjoyed speaking to some of our
Pieces for Peace students in Belgium, who expressed their excitement to take
part in the project and such a meaningful, high-level event. They also
expressed their desire to participate in more global youth projects and create
a Peace Wall in their school in Brussels. We're already speaking with the
school to continue our collaboration. It will be the fifth Peace Wall in the world.
We have an army of young, creative minds out there. I
feel very strongly that we must engage them in positive, meaningful projects
that will shape their own lives and build a better world for us all.
Please make sure you'll come to celebrate the Pieces for
Peace exhibition in December at the United Nations.
Thank you for your support; we need you always.
My very best,
Tsipi Ben-Haim Executive & Artistic Director

Thinking globally and acting locally,
CITYarts' projects build bridges of cultural understanding and give
youth the opportunity to take an active role in shaping their future. The Young Minds Build Bridges program connects our youth in New York to the international
community, spreading their voices in a quest for peace and raising awareness of global warming.
Our projects give youth a stage to ask, "What
can I do to reduce the speed of global warming?" Our teens are taking
the future into their own hands, getting actively involved in their
communities, and assuming responsibility through the creation of murals
and mosaics with CITYarts.
Since 1968, CITYarts has created 279 projects that have
transformed communities and impacted over 100,000 kids, collaborated
with more than 500 artists, and partnered with over 300,000 volunteers
in the process. Thank you in advance for your generous support and for
joining CITYarts in celebrating 40 years of "Making a Difference
Through the Arts." |
