CITYarts
Ribbon Cutting
April 28, 2009
Vol. VI, Issue: 3

Dear Friends,

Come celebrate with us our 272nd project. It is through participation in these kinds of events that you'll feel the immense impact that CITYarts has on communities and our youth. Here, you'll get the opportunity to talk to our fabulous Brazilian artist, Duda Penteado, who energized our many youth volunteers to engage in the creative process, from workshops to the painting of the wall. You will also be able to speak with the youth participants and our collaborators from the NYC Parks Department. Projects like this don't just happen - they require the participation of many.

I want to thank our sponsors, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Sprint Foundation, Newman's Own Foundation, conEdison, The Walt Disney Company, Milton & Sally Avery Arts Foundation, Inc., Goldman Sachs, American Eagle Outfitters Foundation, Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson, Candia Fisher and Winston Fisher.

I'd also like to thank our collaborators Vernetta Diggs, St. John's Recreation Center manager, Kevin Jeffrey, Parks & Recreation Deputy Commissioner for Public Programs, Nicole Moorehead, his Chief of Staff, and the over 200 youth volunteers & CITYarts interns who helped make this permanent mural. We know that it will continue to inspire the community to celebrate nature and raise awareness to help reduce global warming.

Enjoy spring,

Ribbon Cutting

Join CITYarts and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation as we celebrate CITYarts' 272nd public art project, "Nature is Love on Earth". Over the summer of 2008, artist Duda Penteado worked with youth from the St. John's Recreation Center and the Crown Heights community to design and paint the mural. Part of CITYarts' Global HeART Warming project, "Nature is Love on Earth" aims to raise awareness of global warming and celebrate nature.

This will be a special ribbon cutting event, as the Parks Department is also celebrating the reconstruction of six basketball courts, twelve handball courts, and a new playground at the center.

Special thanks to our sponsors: New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Sprint Foundation, Newman's Own Foundation, conEdison, The Walt Disney Company, Milton & Sally Avery Arts Foundation, Inc., Goldman Sachs, American Eagle Outfitters Foundation, Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson, Candia Fisher and Winston Fisher

The celebration begins at 11:00am on Tuesday, April 28 at the rear wall of the recreation center.

Thinking globally and acting locally, CITYarts' projects build bridges of cultural understanding and give youth the opportunity to take an active role in shaping their future.

The Young Minds Build Bridges program connects our youth in New York to the international community, spreading their voices in a quest for peace and raising awareness of global warming.

Our projects give youth a stage to ask, "What can I do to reduce the speed of global warming?" Our teens are taking the future into their own hands, getting actively involved in their communities, and assuming responsibility through the creation of murals and mosaics with CITYarts.

Since 1968, CITYarts has created 272 projects that have transformed communities and impacted over 100,000 kids, collaborated with more than 500 artists, and partnered with over 300,000 volunteers in the process.

Thank you in advance for your generous support and for joining CITYarts in celebrating 40 years of "Making a Difference Through the Arts."
