Dear Friends, We are giving a facelift to Alice on the Wall, a CITYarts mural created right after 9/11 through a special request by Stuyvesant High School.
In 2002, Alice on the Wall was created two blocks away from Ground Zero in collaboration with over 100 students from Stuyvesant High School, the Washington Market Community, and artist Natalia Zukerman. While the mural had been planned prior to September 11th, consideration was given to the emotional and physical connection of the school to the tragic events in lower Manhattan, through a series of discussions and workshops. The students expressed their feelings and ideas through drawings, poems, and paintings. The mural itself is a meaningful reflection of the ability to dream and believe in peace despite acts of violence.
Now, we are restoring Alice on the Wall, repainting chipped and faded areas and redesigning larger areas of the mural that are beyond repair. CITYarts is working in collaboration with students from Stuyvesant High School, artist Jordan Taler, and volunteers from American Express, the Center for Student Missions, and the general public. A special thanks to our sponsors, American Express and other generous
individuals.
The mural series entitled Tribute to New York and New Yorkers, which includes Alice on the Wall, was created as CITYarts' response to the tragedy of September 11th. New York City youth, led by artists, pay tribute to the firefighters, police and New Yorkers of all walks of life, while exploring their vision of a better future. The first project created through this program was the acclaimed Forever Tall mural at Cooper Square.
Please come visit us at the project and help us paint, and encourage members of your community to contribute to this restoration. It is truly a wonderful opportunity to be able to restore Alice on the Wall, giving it a renewed voice with a new group of students.
My best
wishes,
Tsipi

"Thinking globally - acting locally, CITYarts projects build bridges of cultural
understanding and give youth the opportunity to take an active role in shaping
their future".
-- Tsipi

MISSION
CITYarts empowers children and youth by bringing them together with
professional artists to create public art that addresses civic and social
issues, impacts their lives, and transforms their communities.
PROGRAM We give our children and youth the opportunity to get actively involved
in their communities, do something to make their world a better place, and
assume responsibility through the creation of murals and mosaics led by
professional artists.
PROJECTS
CITYarts public art projects give youth a stage to ask, "What does peace look
like to me?", "What can I do to reduce the speed of global warming?",
and other urgent and relevant questions, and to address them artistically
through cooperation and creation.
OUR RESULTS
Since 1968, CITYarts has created over 280
projects, transformed over 200 communities,
impacted over 100,000 kids,
collaborated with 500 artists, and
partnered with 300,000 volunteers in
the process, with the consistent sponsorship of corporations, foundations, and
individuals.
Thank you in advance for your generous support. Please donate now!
