Michelle Stuart is an American multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans more than six decades, encompassing earthworks, installation, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and artist’s books. She studied in Mexico, France, and New York at The New School for Social Research, developing an approach that merges conceptual rigor with a deep engagement with natural and cultural systems.
Stuart is recognized as a pioneer in the use of organic and ephemeral materials—including earth, wax, seeds, and plants—applied to both horizontal and vertical surfaces. Her early large-scale earthworks and installations explore the temporal and transformative qualities of natural matter, while her later photographic work extends these concerns into documentation and visual interpretation. Across media, her work consistently investigates the relationship between humans, the environment, and scientific processes, addressing themes such as extinction, genetic variation, and ecological change.
By integrating the physicality of materials with cultural and scientific inquiry, Stuart has expanded the vocabulary of contemporary art, creating works that balance sensory experience with intellectual investigation. Her oeuvre has been exhibited internationally in major museums and galleries, and she has published numerous artist’s books, further reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary exploration and the intersection of art and the natural world.
