Charles Marburg’s work focuses on organic and geometric forms. He has a large collection of hand cut stencils, accumulated over the life of my studio practice, that he uses to investigate compositional and color possibilities. He began making stencils in order to create alternative lines/levels of inquiry from one painting to the next. He likes to think of this pursuit in terms of a spiral, and not as a never ending hall of mirrors.

He paints on masonite, birch plywood panels, and also canvas stretched over plywood; primarily because these hard surfaces lend themselves to scraping and sanding. He considers the intimacy of the smaller format of easel size paintings best suited for his subject matter.
