Julian Hatton’s paintings, whether representational or abstract, always begin with a landscape—“I find that subject infinitely flexible,” he explains. Hatton, who was influenced by the New York School and their improvisational methods, developed his style from over a decade of painting en plein air. He is known for his vivid use of color, imaginative perspectives, and child-like renderings of his subjects; this belies his careful deliberation and sensitive brushwork. In fact, Hatton’s paintings are frequently the product of multiple revisions. As he describes, “almost all of my paintings are many paintings on top of each other. I use the old shapes to help solve problems in the current painting.” Hatton also makes monoprints based on painted compositions, but re-interpreted to suit the medium.
